The Way Home - a review

I reviewed the movie for Book Sneeze.

My wife an I watched this movie. I had a great message and a good story. A boy is lost and found. It was very predictable and covered a short time span. Some of the "extras" actors seemed a bit... "new". Check it out for yourself. I think you will be pleased.

Over all it was a good movie. I'd recommend it to others.

Bibleman Video Review

I received this DVD as part of the BookSneeze program through Thomas Nelson Publishers. I was given this DVD to review in exchange for my honest opinion.

Bibleman Video: Combating The Commandant of Confusion

I like Bibleman, but this DVD was not up to the good quality of other Bibleman DVDs. This one was live. Maybe that is the reason for the lower quality.

I let my two girls watching the DVD. They said it was "pretty good, but not great." Don't let this keep you from the Bibleman series.

Marshall is the best passer in all of high school basketball. In transition, he handles the ball with his head up and eyes taking a picture of the court to see if the advance pass is available. Everything this young man does throughout the course of a game has a purpose. He plays the game like Jason Kidd.

Stray Affections by Charlene Ann Baumbich

As a fellow "critter lover", this novel was a particularly enjoyable read. I appreciate the author's ability to weave several plots into one story. Thank you for the reminder that God's grace is extended to all. I could often "hear" Burt's guffaw, "see" the 'Everything Room' or have to swallow back my own tears as Betty and Cassie reconciled their relationship.

I will definitely share this novel with my friends.

Today’s USA Today reports that Ford Motor Company is unveiling something new, aimed at helping teen drivers practice safe driving.

MyKey lets parents configure one key as the teen’s. When the car is started with
MyKey, top speed can be limited to 80 mph, and chimes can be set to sound at 45
mph, 55 mph and 65 mph.

Seat belt use is encouraged in two ways: If the
driver and passenger don’t put on their belts, a chime sounds until they do.
Possibly more important to teens: The audio system won’t turn on until the front
two passengers are buckled up.

It can also max out the audio at half
volume (which is still plenty loud), keep track of the young driver’s mileage
and provide earlier low-fuel warnings than standard.

It all sounds so reasonable, doesn’t it? A device that prevents kids from dangerous behavior is probably a good thing. I’ve had students get in serious car accidents. I’ve witnessed teen drivers be involved and even cause fatal car accidents. And I certainly know the dangers and statistics about teen drivers.

Yet, I can’t help but point out that MyKey treats the symptoms of the problem without solving the problem. (Perhaps this amplifies the problem by electronically preventing poor driving?) The problem isn’t the cars ability to go fast, play loud music, or beep when the seat belt isn’t in use. The problem is that we don’t expect teens to be safe drivers. The problem is that when a child gets a citation for reckless driving that the parents keep giving their child the keys. As with other monitoring devices, this gives parents the ability to monitor their behavior without ever having a conversation with their child. Isn’t this just another tethering device that, in effect, prevents teenagers from growing up, learning from their mistakes, and getting a taste of freedom?Isn’t adolescence all about individuation, experimentation, and learning how to be a unique person away from parents?

Five years ago, youth workers started to notice the helicopter parent phenomenon. Kids had to call mom or dad constantly to inform them of their latest position, what they were doing, who they were with. Additionally, parents were anywhere they were allowed. I remember looking out my youth room window while teaching and seeing 2-3 parents spying in… just to keep an eye on what their kid was doing. Now, thanks to mobile phones GPS, cars GPS, and devices like MyKey, parents can call their child at any second as well as monitor their behavior via satellite. We are moving from helicopter parents to satellite parents. And I’m not sure that’s a good thing for adolescent development.

I'm not a big lawn mowing fan. Push the mower around a bit and then next week... same thing. SO, since we've been away more than we've been home this summer, I've not mowed my backyard in about 2 months. It's not high, just thick. I did mow it yesterday. Took a long time. I knew it was thick when a group of boy scouts got made because they were on a nature camp out and I'd scared a family if deer.

Anyway, all is mowed... I think I hear it growing again.

Cruise Withdrawal

Ever been on a cruise? We went on a Disney Cruise, the whole family. It was INCREDIBLE. But, now we're back and we all have cruise withdrawal. I expect it to be a recognized clinical disorder, like postpartum syndrome, post traumatic syndrome or ADD. It will probably be featured on Law and Order or some other crime drama with court cases.

"We find the defendant not guilty your honor. He has 'post traumatic Disney cruise line withdrawal' or PTDCLW."

Gasps are heard all over the courtroom. Children cry. A group of older women and in the back praying.

OK, maybe not. But, man! I wanna go back.

What a delightful read! Thank you for addressing "real life"... relationships, unexpected circumstances, healthy marriages, Godly homes, denial, forgiveness and restoration. I especially enjoyed Summer and Noelle's unplanned adventures. Can't you just picture them floating down the canal in a over-sized yellow wooden shoe. I read several financial blogs. They all have to do with saving money and spending less. One is "Get Rich Slowly." Today's post is about simply buying stuff. It doesn't say "don't buy" but "questions to think about." Read it here.

Student's Say the Darndest Things - Youth Pastors write in about what there student have said. Usually very funny. Mostly a one liner so not mush time involved. Check it out for a laugh.

Stuff Christians Like - Poking some serious fun at Christians. Check out some of his posts like "church hopping." Fun stuff - sometimes lengthy, but usually good.

Statsheet - more stats on sports than you could EVER need. Of course I have my set on UNC.

Rick Womack - my room mate from college. He is on staff in the Georgia Conference for the IPHC.

Book: Living Rich For Less, Ellie Kay

I just read a GREAT book on personal finances. Ellie Kay does an excellent job with "Living Rich for Less." She subtitles it, "Create the lifestyle you want by giving, saving, and spending smart." Her subtitle gives away the three sections of the book.

The book is written from an Christian perspective, but it is not "over the top." It could easily be read without thinking "church." The principles are there no matter what your faith. She promotes the 10/10/80 principle. Give 10%, Save 10%, Live on 80%. She goes on to tell you how to do just that, but not with theory only - she adds personal examples, examples from others as well as practical advice and tips.

I was very encouraged by the book. I've already made several changes based on what she suggested.

The book is also an easy read. You won't get bogged down. But at the same time, take your time. Don't hurry through the book. I'm going back through again.

Book Review: For Young Men Only

For Young Men Only

I wish I had this book when I was a Middle School or High School student. It would have saved me a bunch of grief with girls. Well, I probably would have still had grief, but at least I would have understood the girls better.

This is an EXCELLENT book when it comes to understanding girls. No, it's not a million pages long or magic. It is just a very well written book based on much research about girls.

Jeff Feldhahn & Eric Rice have a great writing style that keeps the book from becoming some regurgitated pile of stats. Instead, it is an easy to read, and sometimes funny, book that gives great insight into the mind of the girls.

In the book:

Why does it seem good girls go for bad boys?

Why do girls say one thing and then something completely different?

What are the "break up" signs.

What are girls really looking for in a guy.

This should be required reading for all guys. It seems to be written mainly for Middle School and High School guys, but all guys could get something out of if. It would be a great read for a father and son too.

By the way, I tried out some of the questions on some of the girls in my youth group... dead on!

I'm reading a new book, Wild Goose Chase by Mark Batterson (author of "In A Pit With A Lion On A Snowy Day"). It is GREAT! He brings the adventure back to being a Christian. I recommend this to anyone looking for something more from their faith than just going to church and trying to "just get by" in life. Read it and put it into life practice... I plan to. bulletin slave to no bulletin

Just read some interesting stuff about ditching the old bulletin and moving to something simpler, eventually easier, web driven and less taxing on the environment. The reason why and how is explained better here and here. Read the first "here" first. Anyway... good stuff. Not sure if it will work for our older congregation. Not sure how many would got to the web for info and everyone wants their stuff IN the bulletin... every week. It is a change of thinking. I like the fact that it makes us think further in advance, plan better.

Lessons from the Kids

I'm home today with Rachel, my youngest. She was running a fever. It is also Sunday. While I'm actually on the "paid" staff, my wife is more "needed" on Sunday mornings. She leads worship. Most of what I do on Sundays is done in advance and then I just ... work on Sunday (help in our Sunday School class - Rhonda leads discussion, help in Kids Zone, hang out with people, etc.). ANYWAY, I told Rachel that I had a surprise for her later and to let me know when she needed a surprise. Well, just about the time I get busy on something, she informs me that she needs her surprise. I told her to wait - which she did. Then I thought, "that was lame." I had told her to tell me when she needed a surprise and then when she did, I made her wait. Lesson learned? NO! I told her she could get on Webkinz when she put away what she was playing with in the living room. She did and again I was in the middle of something and made her wait. Maybe I learned the second time.

Lesson: when you offer something, give it in a timely manner.

She was a good sport. She was very patient.

Fireproof

Rhonda and I went to see "Fireproof" movie. It was a free screening for pastors and church leaders. "Fireproof" is a great movie. Plan to take your spouse, friends, family. Everyone should see it. There are a couple of things to keep in mind. This movie is not a sly Christian movie. It is very upfront with Christian values and themes. BUT, it is done very well. Excellent movie. Sunday Wrap-Up

In Fusion Youth Group Service we looked at a Nooma video, #16 Rhythm. It was extremely good. Part of the point is that we are all part of God's song. The question is are we in tune or out of tune. Good stuff.

The biggest news of the night is that Rhonda Glover announced her engagement to Joe - yea!!! Looking forward to November 22.

I've been at Youth Quest - National Talent finals for IPHC. It was in Daytona Beach. Rhonda, the girls and I took Eric for the National Royal Ranger competition. He did a great job and we all had a bunch fun. Swimming in the ocean was great. Reconnecting with Rick and his family was a highlight. Glad to be home!

Batman: The Dark Knight

I went to see Batman: Dark Knight last night... Awesome Movie! It is so intense. You think it is almost over and then "Bam" "Pow" there is a twist. It is dark - not at all like the cartoon-like Batman movies. It is also true to what I remember about reading Batman comics and watching early Batman shows. It is an excellent follow up to Batman Begins.

Christian Bale is the absolute best Batman. He is not too over the top action, but just right in the roll. I thought no one would be a better Joker than Jack Nicholson, but I was wrong - Heath Ledger really sells the roll. He was a dead on Joker. The rest of the cast was also incredible. No on dropped the ball on this one.

I give it an A!

By the way, they leave some of the story hanging... looking for the next installment. Oh yes!

What to do

First, my last post started with "And my life goes on." That was NOT to mean that I don't want it to go on. I meant, here I still am. I'm alive. I've not posted in a long time, but I'm still alive.

Not sure what to post. I read a bunch of other blogs. Most are inspirational. Not sure if I can be that inspiring. Also, when do you find time to post? Right now I need to be doing many other things. I guess I don't really have anything pressing to post and I don't think I have any readers anyway. Oh well, I read it - that's one!

And my life keeps on going. Today I grilled out for dinner. The girls are in Fayetteville with my parents so it is just me and Rhonda. I grilled some GREAT porkchops. I use some dry rubs on them - hot shot, garlic powder, salt, pepper, bbq rub, blackened - and it is awesome. Rhonda made the fixings. Ummmmm, good stuff.

Anyway, busy life. Learning lots. That's what it is all about, right? Learn as you go. So what are you learning?

Sadly, I'm back

We went on "summer vacation" during "spring break" - weird huh? Well, it works for us. We went to Gatlinburg, TN. AWESOME!! I highly recommend it. AND the best place was free - Cade's Cove. It is an 11 mile drive around one the greatest examples of God's handiwork. Even the drive to Cade's Cove was awe inspiring.

But, alas we are back. We are also in revival with Pastor Jonathan Griffin. Great preacher and wonderful services. He finishes up tonight.

Also, I read a great article on helping students through grieving - here it is. I hope you never need it, but the reality is that you will. It come from the fine folks at Simply Youth Ministry (Doug Fields' peeps).

This will be a bit of a ramble...

UNC in the final 4 - Go Heels! How is your bracket going? I've got 3 of the final 4 teams. I messed up on Memphis - I had Texas beating Memphis. I beat a bunch of folks figured they'd be out by now. Wow, the 4 #1's are in the final 4. Like I said, "Go Heels!"

I added an application to my Facebook that should import my blog. Probably won't happen often... because I don't blog often. Hopefully it will work and I'll get a bit more traffic here. Why do I want more traffic? I don't know... I guess that is what is supposed to happen.

I've got a fun and busy week ahead of me. I'll explain more later. Gotta run!

March - greatest sports month

I actually heard a couple of guys on the radio discussing the best month for sports. It has to be March - March Madness Baby. Duke almost went down tonight - of course that's Duke - almost going down. Too bad - I was pulling for the upset.

UNC - think they can go all the way? I'm hoping so. They have the talent. You also have to get lucky. We'll see.

I think I've found a way for this blog to show up on my Facebook. Odds are I messed something up and it won't be there. No worries - I don't post much.

Home Again

I sat out of another church service tonight. I was planning to go, I feel better, but the voice of reason... my wife... says no. She's right I was diagnosed with pneumonia Monday a week ago. They said it would take at least 3 weeks to recover and it has been only a week and a half. I feel better, but the nurse said that I would catch something (cold, flu) from someone more eaisly with the pneumonia.

So, what am I learning?
<+> I've enjoyed the break, but I'm ready to get back to work.
<+> I can find lots of stuff to do... while not really doing anything - playing on the computer, sudoko, cleaning out some old files, filing receipts, and ... more stuff, stuff, stuff...
<+> I'm still dealing with procrastination - I've had a week and a half to work on my Sunday night youth service (if I get to go) and I've not really worked on it.
<+> I really miss my church family.

So, here I sit... again. Good thing, I got to watch UNC beat up on NCSU and right now Miami is beating Duke - it's a good night... so far. Go Heels, Go Canes.

Sick? Pneumonia? Me?

Ok, I've been hanging out at home... all week... including today (Sunday). That's right - I missed church - stayed home. Caught up on some reading - my mentor group is reading "Practicing Greatness: 7 Disciplines of Extraordinary Sprirtual Leaders" by Reggie McNeal. A great book so far. I totally recommend it for church leaders... all of them.

So, back to by "doctor's order" week off. I am the proud owner of pneumonia. Ok, so I'm not so "proud", but it is weird. Pneumonia? Me? Really? That's right. Here is the deal with pneumonia - you have to REST, take medicine, REST, drink plenty of fluids and, you guessed it, REST. I think I'm all rested up.

Looking back - looking forward

This past week - Went with our Primetimers (seniors) to Pigeon Forge Tuesday - Thursday. Had a blast. They pulled me up on the stage for a stunt at the "Hoot-N-Holler" - that was a trip. Friday and Saturday I was playing some real catch up in the office (bulletin, SongShow - including the pastor's notes for AM and PM services, my youth message, etc.).

Sunday - we had a good number in Kids Zone, they are really growing. Our new Sunday School Class is doing well - HomeBuilders. We went out to lunch with Chris and Denise, to Ruby Tuesdays. I got the Bison Burger and a salad. Pretty good. Great fellowship with great friends.

Today - stayed home to work on bills (ug). I met Chris (yp at Wilson P&W) for lunch then hung out at Saxon's office (yp at FHCOG).

Tonight - watched MNF! I won week 3 in my Fantasy Football League! ROCK ON BABY!

Looking Forward:

I'll have a tough week. We have a WAYnet Student event Wednesday night and SYATP that morning. I also have my regular stuff to do while looking to improving what is going on at Shiloh.

QUESTION: Do you give yourself a rigid schedule? I try to have a "to do" list, but they gets all goofed up as the week goes on. I've got some projects that I'd like to work on, but I have so many other things to do... first. I get frustrated. I want to work on our "first impressions" team (we don't really have one - we have greeters), a program to help folks share their faith, BE a youth pastor (and children too), and ... Get the picture?

Got any advice?

Fantasy Football Thoughts

I'm in a fantasy football league. We are using cbs sportsline - the free league. I won my game the first week and I had the highest score for the week. So far this week I'm winning my game. I have two players to watch on Monday night (S. Moss and Cooley - both from Washington). My opponent has the kicker from the Chargers (playing now as I type) and a receiver from Washington. Hopefully I can pull out another win.

Here are my thought. Fantasy Football makes you pull for or against teams/players that you would not usually pull for... or against. For example, T.O. is on my best receiver. Now I don't usually pull for him and NEVER for Dallas. BUT, there I was pulling for T.O. and Dallas. Crazy, huh?

Well, I'm hooked. I love Fantasy Football. My problem is that when I'm looking at trading players or picking them up from waivers, I'm too afraid of picking the wrong guy. I've only made two roster changes. I also switched one of my starting running backs with a reserve, then switched him back. It cost me 6 points. Ooops.

The Weekend

Took a break Saturday. The family and I went to the NC Farmer's Market. That was fun. We bought some fresh veggies, fresh baked bread and ate at the NC Seafood Restaurant - ummmm, good stuff. I went up to church when we got home - stayed for quite a while. We've made some major changes to Sunday School and children's ministry - had to get that taken care of.

Sunday was good. I stayed in Kids Zone for the morning then to the Glover's home for lunch. We stayed there most of the day then they came over to watch "The Pursuit of Happiness." Very good movie. Don't tell Rhonda I said that - I gave her a hard time about having to watch it. Before it came on I watched the USA basketball team with the FIBA gold medal. Love watching the USA team.

Monday was pretty good - off for labor day. We spent the whole day in the yard... doing yard work. Started about 9 AM and laid down for a rest after a shower about 3:30 PM. Good stuff. I'm still a bit sore.

Sports - Braves are... drifting to the bottom of the pile. Tarheels won their first game. Other teams I watched - Clemson beat FSU (called that one). Georgia Bulldogs won theirs (lived in GA 4 years - college - so I pull for the Dawgs, and my college roomie lives their and pulls for them). NCSU & Duke lost! Other than the Braves, my teams did pretty well.

What's been going on lately? It seems like I get busier and busier at church. Home life is pretty even. My oldest daughter will be going to school, 3rd grade, a week from Monday. My youngest will go to a Christian Day School when no one is available to keep her.

Saw Bourne Ultimatum - great movie. Brings everything to a close. Great stuff. Used the shaky camera - looking like you are right there with the action.

Took the youth group to Busch Gardens Williamsburg - great time there. Rode the new Griffin roller coaster. Big-time fun! If you've not been and can go... get there soon. Stopped at Sonic on the way home.

Restructured our adult Sunday School program. We've had all the adults meeting together in the Fellowship Hall this summer. We've served a light breakfast each Sunday. Now we've combined out two "oldest" classes into one - the PrimeTimers. We brought back our "middle-adults" the Seekers. We are also creating a new class, HomeBuilders. This will be for married folks. We are hoping to pull in some of our couples who don't already come to Sunday School into this class.

Made changes in our Children's Ministry on Sunday mornings. We've really enjoyed the children all meeting together for the Sunday School and Church hours, but it has been difficult for the 3 main workers to keep it together. SO, we are going to have a large group start for the first 15 minutes, then the children go to their small groups - Sunday School. After Sunday School, they come back to the gym for a large group celebration (Worship, prayer, scripture memorization, object lesson, etc.). After the celebration they go to their Kids Zone worker of the day for a craft, Sunday School review, games etc. Our theme will be "God's Training Station."I'll be the Engineer. Our pastor will be the Conductor, of course. Sunday School teachers and Kids Zone workers will be Station Masters. Special helpers will be Porters and the children will be Stewards.

Joined a fantasy football league. This is a first for me. I've wanted to be in one for a while. In fact, I've kicked around the idea of having one at Shiloh, just haven't yet. This will give me a chance to check it out. Found out there are no girls in the league, so that takes care of the whole getting beat by a girl thing. So, there's that.

That's all for now. Getting ready for Fusion Live (youth service). Probably should be looking that over.

Looking for an online calender for our family to use. I set up one with Cozi, but then found out that all the options were not available if you just use it online. It has a download version that you use on a central computer and then access it from other computers (and enter data) from online.

I found an article that talks about online based family calendars.

A Great Fable

Here is a great fable - I got it from a daily email from Mikeys Funnies. If you want a great clean funny every day, subscribe!

Mr. Rabbit was walking down the road when he spotted a crow at the tip top of a very tall tree. He shouted, "Good morning, Mr. Crow."

Mr. Crow shouted back down, "Good morning, Mr. Rabbit."

Mr. Rabbit shouted up, "Whata ya doin' today?" and the answer shouted back down was, "Absolutely nothin' Mr. Rabbit! Absolutely nothin' and loving it."

Well, that sounded pretty good to Mr. Rabbit. So he shouted back up, "Do you think I could do that too?"

Mr. Crow shouted back down, "I don't see why not!"

Well, Mr. Rabbit lay down on the side of the road and began doing absolutely nothing.

Down the River we went

This past weekend I took a group to West Virginia for a rafting experience. We rafted the New River and had a blast. We went with Appalachian Wildwater again. This is our third time with this company and this same river. As far as I know it is the best deal out there. Great facilities - they have a pool and hot tub on site. They also have a game room with a pool table. We stayed in platform tents for two nights, they are really comfortable. Saturday, the day we rafted, we started with a great hot breakfast and then off for our bus ride to the put in spot. The first half of the trip was family class - not a lot of big stuff. We stopped half way down the river for a deli lunch and then on for the adventurous part of the trip. Great rapids - Great fun! When we finally made it back to the outpost, we were served dinner - choice of steak, chicken, salmon or spaghetti. All very good - I got the steak.

Sunday morning we had a service together - I talked about encouraging each other then about sharing our story with others. I ended with this:

We only called to share Jesus to the extent that we know him.

You see the woman at the well only told people, "come and see the man who told me everything I ever did." She didn't have some deep theological sermon to give, she wouldn't have been able to answer any questions - she told everything she knew about the great encounter of her life. THAT is what we are challenged to do - tell people about the greatest encounter of our lives - Jesus.

Pretty good I think.

Eating in Wilson - Mama Mia's Pizzeria

Monday, took the family to Mama Mia's Pizzeria. They don't have a website, but they do have great food. It was our first visit to the Pizzeria. I got the Chicken Parmesan Sandwich and Rhonda got the Cheese Steak Sandwich. The meals came with fries or onion rings and a drink. I got fries while Rhonda got the onion rings. We split both meals. Great food! Hannah got a great slice of pizza and Rachel got the Baked Ziti. The girls said their lunch was "yummy!"

The service was good too. Our drinks were never empty and the place was clean. We will go back.

After lunch Rhonda and the girls took off for Williamsburg for the week. So, I've been in Wilson alone. I've eaten at San Jose with a buddy of mine and Parker's BBQ with Pastor Long.

End of the Spear

Last night we watched "End of the Spear" with our youth group. We went over to a sponsors home, Rhonda (not my wife) to watch it. She was having the girls spend the night after youth service, so we decided to just watch the movie at her house. Very powerful. Really makes you think. Would you be willing to give all for the sake of the gospel? It is easy preaching and doing ministry in our air-conditioned churches with people who understand what you are trying to do. The question the movie begs is what are you really doing with your life? What are you doing with the gift God has given you? I'm afraid, not much.

Eating in Wilson

I'm starting a new string (is that the right word?). It will be eating in Wilson, NC restaurants. We'll see how it goes.

Tonight, after getting a hair cut, we went to Chili's with Cecil & Ann Lemmons. Cecil cut my hair. They are both GREAT folks. Papa Cecil and Mema Ann. Our kids love them.

Rhonda and I split a couple of dishes. We ordered the Southwestern Egg Rolls off the appetizer menu along with the new Texas Cheese Fries. The Cheese Fries had cheese (of course), bacon and jalapenos on them. Ummmm good. The Southwestern Egg Rolls were great. They are a long-time favorite. We also ordered the Chicken Club Tacos. They were excellent. No we couldn't eat everything. We brought home a couple of boxes. The girls got the kids rib basket with broccoli and the pizza basket with baked apples. We also ordered chips and salsa for an appetizer. The Lemmons both ordered the Chicken Club Tacos. I'd recommend all the above ordered, except the pizza. Just didn't look good, but then it was a kids menu item.

I'll give it a 9 out of 10. The waiter was a bit slow, but he told us they were short handed and he seemed to be working half the tables in the restaurant. So we cut him some slack.

Digging my iPod

Man, I'm loving my iPod and iTunes. Can really see some $$$ slipping through the fingers and into my iPod. Must show restraint. My wife bought me a gift card to iTunes - very cool.

Ok, for a snip it of my life...

In the last two weeks:

I went to see Transformers with some boys from my youth group - great movie, great time with the guys.
My wife and girls are Virginia visiting my in-laws - be gone for a week.
I've spent more time reading other peoples blogs than writing my own (obviously).
Putting the finishing touches on a rafting trip.
Booked my trip to the National Youth Workers Convention in Atlanta. My wife will be going with me. How cool is that? She's never been interested in that before.
Been playing with my iPod. I've figured out how to play it through the Kids Zone and youth group sounds systems. So no more burning CDs for music. I'll just play it through the iPod. Very cool.
Got the church to get a subscription to www.powerpointsermons.com. They do really good stuff. I've been putting our pastor's sermon notes on SongShow for Sundays. A bit time consuming, but worth it. Of course I know what he is preaching before everyone else - that's kind of cool. Maybe I'll offer people a sneak peak for a price. Hmmmmm $$$$

I guess that's all for now. Time for bed.

I tried to pray, I got nothing

Let's start with a "PS." - I started this post on July 6 and now it is July 10... so the first part is from the 6th and now I'll follow up ... well, now.

Are you always successful when you pray? How do you know, I mean right away? I've struggling with some ministry stuff lately and I found myself at home for a bit by myself, so I decided to pray. Good idea, right? I guess not. I tried. I really did. But basically I just knelt there and had nothing. Nothing to say, nothing by way of tears, nothing by way of suggestions to God (don't we usually have some suggestions for the Almighty or is it just me?). So I just knelt there. Here is what did come to mind. Jesus said He would send the Holy Spirit, the Comforter (John 16:7). That's what I needed. Jesus also said He would intercede for us to the Father. (Hebrews 7:25-26; Romans 8:26-28)I need that too. I had nothing - I'm glad they've got something. Did I mention that I had nothing? Well, I didn't. I just knelt there with nothing to say. I'm so glad I serve a BIG God who can handle it... even without my suggestions.

Now comes July 10th. I'm still struggling a bit. I guess I'm going through one of those "dark times." Yes, I know "Jesus is the Light" and all. I'm just struggling with my vision right now. I KNOW that I will come through it and will be better for it. It is just a bummer sometimes when you are IN IT!. Anyway, thank you in advance for your prayers. I've been thinging what would make a good 100th post. I haven't a clue. So I'll just send a little update...

>>> I'll be preaching July 1. We have a deal called "Freedom Sunday." It is the closest Sunday preseeding 4th of July. We serve hot dogs/hamburgers, homemade ice-cream, snow-cones, cotten candy, etc. Our pastor already had a revival planned for another church, so I get the nod. I feel like a relief pitcher coming out of the dugout. Maybe I need my own music. What would be a good song to "run out onto the platform" to? Maybe "Bad to the Bone" or "We Will Rock You". That may not go over well. I'm sure "Shout to the Lord" would not work - I don't get too excited. I'll take any suggestions.

The latest what? I guess the latest about me, of course! It's been a while since my last post. I just get busy and then when I sit down to post, something else comes up, usually like ready everyone else's postings. That really eats your time. BUT, I get to read some really good ones.

One I read today compared the fastfood pictues to the real thing. You've got to check this out.

More? Here you go... (this is isn't all, I just don't want you to fall asleep at your computer and drool all over your keyboard - ewwww)

Sunday (June 10) was Grad. Sunday. I got to preach even though it was our new pastor's second Sunday with us. What a cool honor. I used a bicycle in my sermon: Bicycle of Life: Getting Ready for a Brand New Journey. Here it is in a nutshell (without scripture refs. sorry. If you want them, just let me know). Wheels = Faith (got to have your own and keep them pumped up - I gave each grad a bike pump with "Faith" written on it.) Peddles = Action (get involved, go somewhere, enjoy life) Handlebars & Breaks = Direction & Choices (life is about choices, make good ones) Balance (control your life) The Journey ahead. The we prayed for each grad.
Sunday night in Fusion Life (youth service) I used each of the grads favorite verse to talk about life. They really picked some good ones. They also submitted some quotes. One of my favorites what by Justin. He said, "God created us all to be superman, we have to choose to wear the S." That is so cool. God doesn't make any junk or mistakes - but we sure can make it look that way when we are outside of his will.
Mine and Rhonda's anniversary is coming up - tomorrow - 14 years! I've got some special stuff planned - very creative this year (no, that doesn't mean cheap). I'll share more later - Rhonda may read my blog... but I doubt it.
We went to see Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End on opening night - I thought is was very good - a bit slow at the beginning, but it picked up nicely. Maybe a #4 coming. I hope so. Next big movie: Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer! Maybe taking the youth group boys. And YES, my wife is planning to see it with me too. She is so cool!
UNC is in the College World Series! Is your team? Did you know that colleges play more than Football and Basketball? UNC is thinking about having a football team next year (ha ha ha). Go Heels!
Took my 2 kids to the dentist today. No cavities AND the dentist and hygienist are both Heels fans.
Did some downloading from iTunes this weekend. (hey, someone send me an iPod or at least some iTunes gift certs. - that would be nice). I downloaded some songs to used for the Grad. Picture Show (makes moms cry to see their babies all growing up). Here is my list... don't judge me...

Are you living Acts 2 or Acts 17

I read an interesting post by Mark Batterson about the difference between Acts 2 and Acts 17. His main point is that we live in an Acts 17 environment. People are spiritual, religious even. They are asking the right questions, just asking the wrong god. They are asking the "gods" of this world instead of the One True God.

A few weeks ago I heard James Emery White, former President of Gordon-Conwell Seminary, speak at the Q Conference. And he made a great distinction between two approaches to culture. He said we can't afford to approach culture as if we're living in an Acts 2 age where we're surrounded by God-fearing Jews. We need to approach culture like we're living in an Acts 17 age where we're surrounded by idolatry like Paul in Athens. I've always felt like Acts 17 is "the model" when it comes to decoding culture.

I would describe Athens as a culture of misdirected spirituality. There were altars all over the place including the altar to an unknown god. Seems to me that America is a nation of worshippers, but our worship is misdirected. We worship celebrities. We worship athletes. We worship wealth. We worship the body. We worship just about everything except God.

America is full of spirituality, but it is often in the form of idolatry. But we can't boycott the aeropagus. We've got to compete in the marketplace of ideas. We've got to find spiritual touchpoints. Paul started with what they worshipped--the altar to the unknown god--and used it to preach about Christ.

For what it's worth, it seems to me that songs and movies are really altars to an unknown God. They ask the right questions and raise the right issues. But they fall short because they don't have the answers! Part of decoding culture is doing what Paul did in Acts 17:23: Now what you worship as something unknown I am going to proclaim to you.

My response to him was: You are so right. I used the Acts 17 the last time I had an opportunity to preach in the sanctuary. Paul started where they were, complimented them ("I see you are a religious people") and then shifted to Jesus (the "unknown god"). What a GREAT model. AND, NO, we are NOT in an Acts 2 environment as the norm.thanks!

Little Update

So much has been going on lately. Here is a short rundown.

We have a new pastor, Rev. T. Elwood Long. He was my pastor in the late 80's at Mt. Carmel and then our Conference Superintendent after that for 11 years. In fact, he was the superintendent when I received my minister's license and then my ordination 2 years later. I'm excited to be working with him. He has much wisdom.

Memorial Day was nice. That was the Sunday the church voted on Pastor Long. We did not have an evening service, so we had some extra family time.

School is almost out and my daughter is VERY excited. We are fixing snow cones for her class Monday.

Graduation Sunday is June 10th. No, I'm not ready. I get to preach Grad. Sunday, but I've got other things to prepare for that Sunday too - senior picture show is the biggest deal.

We start a new Sunday School and Kid's Zone schedule Sunday - for the summer. All the adults will be meeting together for Sunday School. The teachers will rotate through the summer. The kids will all meet together from Sunday School (9:45 AM) through the end of morning worship (about noon). We are using a VBS program and building around that. I will be an exciting summer.

I guess that's enough for now.

Letter of Recomendation for Chelsey

I was asked to write a letter of recommendation for one of my students for a scholarship. When I finished the letter I thought I'd have a little fun with it. I used the basics of the letter to create a "new" and "improved" letter. I hope you liked it. Yes, I left her last name out on purpose.

Special thanks to Chelsey for not only asking me to write the letter, but also being the type of person that it is easy to write a great letter about.

I am submitting this letter of recommendation concerning Chelsey . I have known Chelsey since 2001 as the role of her Youth Pastor. During that time, I have found Chelsey to be dependable and always willing to help. She is often feeding the homeless and orphan children in town and the surrounding areas while tutoring in the subjects of math, lunch and darts. Chelsey also bakes bread for left-handed hippies while teaching thumb-wrestling to the neighborhood nerds. She actively participates in church functions including attending youth group activities, organizing senior citizen jell-o eating contests (of which she has won three), singing on the Church Worship Team, digging random ditches around the parking lot, and volunteering to work in the church nursery. She is also the official taste-tester for all church meals and is often seen in photographs.

She also translates all of the Sunday morning messages into Morse code and sends them out over her homemade CB. It is also rumored that she invented the Internet. Studies show that she will be able to stop global warming by 2009 – or at least March of 2010.

Chelsey drives the speed limit, buckles-up for safety and daily checks the air pressure in her car as well as everyone else’s car at her school parking lot and the hospital. She knows how to check photo IDs and fry chicken, both of which she can do under water.

Chelsey is truly concerned about others around her. She keeps a positive attitude even when running in circles with her eyes closed chasing away bullies from small children. She also has a great sense of humor. She never makes fun of people, well, almost never. If she does, I’m sure she has a good reason.

One of her special abilities is that she can fly. She can also rope a steer while eating a pickle and talking on the phone. She has done this while flying a kite, but only once.

Chelsey is trustworthy and responsible. One strong example of these traits is the fact that she is the primary babysitter for my two daughters who beg for my wife and me to go on a date so that Chelsey can come to keep them, she always brings them back. She knows the difference between real and pretend food. She bakes cookies, both kinds.

In conclusion, Chelsey really helps people. If it were not for the help she gives, that help would not be given. Of that, I am convinced.

I was reading a blog today, SerialYouthPastor, and came across a video on YouTube about worship. The question posed, "Is worship becoming a consumer industry?" The video is by Brian McLaren. I agree with most of the video - especially the parts at the beginning. Of course, I'm not sure about everything Brian says. I think he goes a bit too far on the last part.

Found an interesting article on LifeWay Pastor's Today email. The article was to promote a new book by Diana Davis, Fresh Ideas: 1,000 Ways to Grow a Thriving and Energetic Church. They listed several in the article, I've copied three. My personal favorite is #2. It would be fun to see where everyone goes this summer.

1. Take it outside
Choose a beautiful summer Sunday and plan a morning or evening worship service outside on the church lawn or at a nearby park. Hang a banner to invite passersby to join you.

How about an outdoor movie night on a blank exterior wall, a softball tournament, or an all-church picnic?
Stage a quality outdoor music performance featuring your youth band, Vacation Bible School musical, praise team, choir or a guest performer or band.

2. I went to church in Kalamazoo

Writing a Reference Letter - about yourself

There have been several things I've been planning to blog about, just no time. Our pastor's last Sunday was Mother's Day Sunday and I've got some extra duties (as well as an all day Annual Conference coming up). I still have my own duties (ministry, youth group, children's ministry, the bulletin, etc.) as well as getting ready for some new stuff. Anyway, I've had this one particular verse come to my mind/heart several times and today, HomeWord had it as the key verse in their daily devotion. If you don't get HomeWord devotions, give them a try.

The Reference Letter
This devotional was written by Leslie Snyder

For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned.—Romans 12:3

When I was preparing to graduate from college, I began working on my resume. As a college graduate, I was proud of my education, my honors and achievements, and of the experiences I had accumulated. I was ready to meet the world and for the world to meet me! I had every intention of landing the perfect job after the first interview and beginning my life as a professional. Only one small obstacle was left to overcome: receiving a letter of reference from one of the hardest professors in my department. Because I worked in the department during my college years, I was very familiar with his procedure of writing letters of reference. I watched many highly capable, confident students walk into his office with the request for a reference, only to walk out of the office nervous, frustrated, and a little lost. I always thought it was a little comical until it was my turn. What was it that changed so much in the time it took to walk into the office and turn around and walk out? The assignment. This particular professor was happy to be a reference if the student wrote his or her own letter describing his or her strengths, weaknesses, areas of growth, and personal assessment of future potential. He would read the letter, make any suggestions for change and then sign the finished product. It was a daunting task and one that likely still makes graduates nauseous.

I don’t remember what I wrote in my letter, but I do remember his comment. “You have a good grasp of Romans 12:3.” At the time I had little understanding of what Romans 12:3 was all about, but I quickly looked it up in my Bible, underlined it and put it in my heart as a verse to live by.
Culture today could use a fresh dose of this truth. It only takes a moment to see why. Many athletes pound their chests, talk smack, and dance around the end zones in personal celebration. Actors and musicians seek fame and attention at any cost. Marketers and advertisers shout the mantra “it’s all about you,” and “You’re worth it!” If
you think the church has escaped this poison, think again. Success-oriented ministries abound, and many leaders have fallen hard thinking they were above the temptations that eventually seized them.
Philippians 2: 3-4 reads,
“Don’t push your way to the front; don’t sweet talk your way to the top. Put yourself aside, and help others get ahead. Don’t be obsessed with getting your own advantage. Forget yourselves long enough to lend a helping hand” (The Message).

now? Try a new desk designed at the Mayo Clinic.
They built what they called a "vertical workstation" -- a desk fitted over a standard treadmill. They persuaded 15 obese people to work at this treadmill-desk and measured how many calories they burned.
If an overweight office worker used this vertical workstation all day, every day for a year, he or she could lose up to 66 pounds (30 kg), the researchers report in the British Journal of Sports Medicine.

I just read this post by Craig Croeschel. It is VERY good. No, I'm not an athiest, but I identify with what Craig is saying sometimes.

Sometimes I’m a “practical atheist.”
Spiritually, I believe in God. But practically, I live as if He doesn’t exist.
If I REALLY trusted God, I wouldn’t worry so much.
If I REALLY believed it was His church and not mine, I’d sleep better.
If I REALLY believed in prayer, I’d spend less time strategizing and more time on my knees.

Sleep Apnea

I took a sleep test last night. The doc said I have a severe case of sleep apnea (note two interesting links for sleep apnea - one is the American Sleep Apnea Association and the other is the now famous Wikipedia.

My case was so severe that they stopped the first part of the test in the first 2 hours. My oxygen level had dropped so much and so often I was scaring the ladies monitoring the study. The started me on the second part of the test. Usually you come back in a couple of weeks for that. Not me, I was started right away. I'm now the proud owner of a CPAP machine. I'm looking forward to some good sleep... ummmmm sleep.

Of course I've heard it really takes some getting used to the mask. I'll probably feel like this for a while...

I'll let you know how it goes.

Spiderman 3

I took my wife to see Spiderman 3 on Monday. She'd arranged us to have a date night - kids all taken care of. We went out to El Tapatio for dinner. Then it was off to see Spiderman 3. I've read several blogs and review of Spiderman 3 so you are probably tired of hearing about it. I'll be brief in my comments.

Movie for entertainment: I loved it. It was a bit busy with the black suit theme, the Goblin Jr. theme, the sandman theme, the MJ theme and the new photographer/Venom theme - BUT, I loved it. It all worked to a climax at the end.

Movie for spiritual content: There is so much to say here.

I read an interesting blog about "boosting your productivity" by Steve Pavlina. This is part of two blogs he posted. They both had 33 ways to boost your productivity - thats a total of 66 (just trying to help). I put some of my favorites, ok I put a bunch of my favorites, here. Check out his blog for the rest. >>Nuke it! The most efficient way to get through a task is to delete it. If it doesn’t need to be done, get it off your to do list.
>>Daily goals. Without a clear focus, it’s too easy to succumb to distractions. Set targets for each day in advance. Decide what you’ll do; then do it.
>>Worst first. To defeat procrastination learn to tackle your most unpleasant task first thing in the morning instead of delaying it until later in the day. This small victory will set the tone for a very productive day.
>>Peak times. Identify your peak cycles of productivity, and schedule your most important tasks for those times. Work on minor tasks during your non-peak times.

I came across this free font site and downloaded a bunch - probably too many. I'll never use all those fonts. But they are very cool. The site is called Fonts500. Check it out. Take a peak. I'm sure you'll find a bunch you like. It puts 100 fonts on a page and there are 5 pages - thus 500 free fonts. There is also a page to help you install your new fonts. Easy as pie... ummmmm pie. We bought a GREAT blueberry pie in Lancaster, PA over Spring Break - man was it good!!! But, "GREAT blueberry pie" is not the topic this morning.

Another Font idea/tip. Search the Internet, but there is a macro or command that you can run in MS Word to print out all your fonts. I do that sometimes and then delete the ones I'll never. I also use it to see what I have. So many fonts. I seem to use the ones in the upper area of the alphabet because I get to them first.

Date Idea: Every month my wife puts two dates on my calendar, two "date nights." It is great. Often she plans and and then I plan the other. (I've got a "surprise" date planned for one of our May dates. Shhhh, it's a secrete.) Sometimes we plan them together and other times we do the normal, "what do you want to do?" "I don't know, what do you want to do?" Then we go out to dinner. BUT, last night we did a really fun, creative date. (She planned it of course). Here is the scoop.

She picked up a movie. Then she fixed dinner for the family. After dinner, Deb kept the kids and we took our movie, some popcorn (popped on the stove - not in the microwave - good stuff, closest to movie popcorn I've had), sodas, candy, a blowup mattress, some pillows and headed up to the youth room. She blew up the mattress, I got ice and turned on the digital projector. Then we got cozy and watched the flick on big screen. Very nice, very nice indeed.

The movie: The Guardian - with Kevin Costner and Ashton Kutcher. Now, I don't think I would have picked this one out, BUT, it turned out to be a great movie. A couple of places they could have cut down on the language and Ashton's character's romance was not exactly "pure." But the underlying message: "saving lives and giving your life for someone else" was very well done. This is definitely a movie to rent. Costner and Kutcher do a great job selling the hardships and rewards of being in the United States Coast Guard.

Pearls Before Breakfast

Have you read the article in the Washington Post, Pearls Before Breakfast? You must. It is about master violinist, Josh Bell, playing is violin as a street musician at the entrance to the Metro. He is playing great music, music people pay to here. He is playing on a 3 1/2 million $$ Stradivarius. Guess what, people just keep walking. Very few stop and only one recognize him. He played for almost an hour.

Read it and think about this:

God is playing music for us, His music of love for us. So many just walk on by. What is wrong with our Ears and Eyes? Why don't we recognize Him? There is noting wrong with Him, He is perfect, true and real.

I've been reading Mark Batterson's blog lately (Thanks Rick). Today he posted some thoughts on communion that he got from Rob Bell. I found them very enlightening. I'll be thinking on this for a while, chewing on it so to speak. I'd love to hear what you have to say.

Here is Mark talking about what he heard Rob Bell speaking about:

He talked about the eucharist. And used the phrase body broken, blood poured. And then he said something that's never even crossed my mind: leadership is a reenactment of the eucharist. In a sense, our bodies our broken and our blood is poured. Not in the substitionary sense of what Jesus accomplished as a sinless sacrifice. But maybe "do this" in the phrase "do this in remembrance of me" isn't just a reference to the act of communion. Maybe it has broader ramifications. Maybe "do this" means do what I've done. In a sense, we are a living eucharist.

Wow, that's a twist on what we've always heard and taught. Of course we know we are to be like Christ. After all that is what "Christian" means - "little Christ." This just makes it more - WOW!

Ok, that title sounds a bit antagonistic, doesn't it? Well, I just read some comments about the VT Tragedy that really struck me. Darien quoted from an article about the individuals murdered. It goes into some detail about several of them and said that it is sad that the murderer will get much more "ink" than the victims. That is truly sad. These were people, like you - they had dreams, purpose and a God who loved them.

As you read about of some of the people murdered at Virginia Tech, Monday, consider how these were ordinary people who allowed God to shape them into the kind of person who would just naturally do what Jesus would do.
"As we search for some “meaning” or lesson from the Virginia Tech massacre, it is predictable that we will read endless analysis of the life and mind of the killer, Cho Seung-Hui. But what about those he killed?
Lauren McCain, 20 years old, from Hampton, Virginia was a freshman. On her MySpace page she told readers she had two heroes, Jesus Christ and her brother.
Austin Cloyd, 18, originally from Illinois, loved kids and spent his summers on mission trips to Appalachia to minister to the poor.
Liviu Librescu, 76, was a Holocaust survivor from Romania, who fought communism in his home country before moving to Israel. He was murdered on Holocaust Memorial Day, as he tried to keep the killer out of his classroom until his students could flee.
Matthew La Porte, 20, was in the corps of Air Force cadets at Virginia Tech and reportedly died trying to help others who had already been shot.
Rachael Hill, 18, graduated from Grove Avenue Christian School in Richmond,Virginia and was described as “gracious” and “loving.”
Ryan Clark, 22, was the resident advisor killed in the dorm when he responded to sounds of violence. He was pursuing a triple major in psychology, biology and English.
The list - of 32 people filled with promise and hope - goes on and on. They won’t get nearly the amount of “ink” as the man who murdered them, but they and their families deserve our prayers and our remembrance."

The challenge for us today is to consider whether or not we're prepared to live like Jesus. Not just try to live like Jesus. Because trying won't cut it. We need to train and prepare to live like Jesus.
Jesus said, "I am the vine and you are the branches. He who remains in me will bear much fruit for apart from me you can do nothing." (John 15:5) If you want to be ready to respond well under the worst of circumstances, then train to remain connected to Jesus, the vine. Train by meeting with him each day in his word and with his spirit. Trust him. Follow him. Live like him.

My comments to Darien:

You are right. So much "ink" given to the killer and the victims get lumped together in the number "32." They cease to be individuals and are forever linked in a group. Sad. Thanks for the more personal info.
Another problem is all the talk about "bringing everyone closer together." It is sad that tragic events like 911, Columbine and VT are what bring us together (and it does and should). But, imagine if communities, schools, churches, small group came "closer together" because of serving one another, respecting each other. That would truly be great.

I'm serious about that last part. "What if?" Look for opportunities to serve each other, love each other, honor each other - instead of waiting for a tragedy. Let's see how that looks.

It seems the web is buzzing with talk about the VT tragedy. Many are blogging their thoughts - both from a Christ centered perspective and a world view perspective (I didn't want to use the words "secular and Christian" or "secular and sacred" - but there you go).

Frank Beemer (football coach at VT) said this will bring the Hokies closer together. He also canceled the spring game (a big deal at VT) because as he said, (full article here)

"There's things more important than football right now. There's a lot of grieving families here and there's going to be a lot of grieving families here Saturday. I just thought it was the right thing to do."

Here is the last lines from the article (quotes from the basketball coach and more from Coach Beemer).

"I'm numb right now thinking about the parents coming to campus to identify
their children," Greenberg told ESPN.com on Monday. "It's hard to put into
words. What would drive someone to do this?
"This is the most peaceful, tranquil and safe environment. But this shows that there is nowhere that you're safe from tragedy or this type of senseless violence. It's devastating."
The convocation Tuesday packed Cassell Coliseum, and more than 20,000 people who didn't fit in the basketball arena watched on a huge video screen inside Lane
Stadium. As the service was winding down, English professor Nikki Giovanni

I really like that last line, "We're hurt, but this one guy's not going to dictate how we're going to act."

There were only questions – questions that had nothing to do with sports.
Why did this happen? How could this happen? What can we do to make sure it never happens again? Unlike sports talk radio, there are no answers. Hell, everybody has the answers when it comes to sports, but nobody has the slightest idea why something as senseless as this has to happen.
Maybe we all need to redirect our focus a little bit. Maybe we need to spend less time wondering why so many athletes have guns and more time wondering why we have so many guns in the first place. Maybe we need to spend less time worrying about the violence in a hockey game and more time worrying about the violence in a video game. Maybe we need to spend less time hating Barry Bonds and more time
loving our children.
Maybe, just maybe, if we do this, we'll have time to figure out how to make sure something like this never happens again. The thoughts, sympathies and prayers of all of us at Yahoo Sports! go out to the students, faculty, and staff at Virginia Tech.

Wow, so much response, so many words. But what are we doing? Like everyone else, I'm trying to process it by writing and talking about it. But what can we do to make a difference? I think two main things: 1. PRAY - sounds like to easy of an answer, like a cliche, but it should be the first option, the first response. God hears us and comforts us. 2. SERVE - Let people see our faith, spend time with students - not just telling them how to live, but showing them. Jesus called us to be a "light." Are we? Or do we just write about it?

I'm afraid these tragedies will not stop. As long as there is sin in the world, bad stuff will happen. But I believe we can make a difference when it does.

Already talking NCAA Basketball

Just read an article from the WRAL.com email news about part of next year's basketball season, the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. Yes, I know this season just ended (a bit too early for the 'Heels), but hey, I do live right here in "Tobacco Road." Here is part of the article.

A rematch between Ohio State and North Carolina highlights next season's basketball showdown between the Atlantic Coast Conference and the Big Ten.
The Tar Heels beat the Buckeyes 98-89 in Chapel Hill last season, but the anticipated matchup between Tyler Hansbrough and Greg Oden never materialized because Oden was nursing a broken hand. That matchup may not occur on Nov. 28, either, if Oden decides to forego his remaining three years and enter the NBA draft.
The ACC won last year's challenge 8-3 and has won all eight Big Ten-ACC showdowns.

Bring on the basketball... OK we have to get though the NBA playoffs, NHL stuff, Baseball & Football. I'll be waiting.

Been away... now back

I've been on vacation! Great time with the family. We went to Hershey, PA. We stayed at The Suites at Hershey. Hershey World was first on the list. You gotta go. Big Fun! We also hit most of the Amish spots (Lancaster, PA; Bird-in-Hand, PA; Intercourse, PA; Farmers Market, etc.). And YES! we ate good! We were there for week. Drove up after the morning Easter service at Shiloh and left to come home the following Sunday afternoon. It was good to get back to my lazy-boy.

Lots gone in since my last post:

Imus - said nasty, racial stuff - should be punished. BUT, would this be the same if the race roles were reversed? Why do rappers and other "musicians" get to say basically the same things and it is OK? Who is going to tackle that one?

A buddy of mine tackled this one too, good writing Rick.

VT - sadness struck hard. It is a time of morning. I wish I had words of wisdom to offer, but all I can do is pray for the victims families, friends and the students at VT. May God comfort you, wrap His love around you in a way only He can. Darien said it well, when he said,

"Today we pray that in the aftermath of this tragedy God's grace would meet us all in our point of need. Whether it is to mourn the loss of a loved one, deal with the reality that it could have been us, or lift up those who will lead funerals and memorial services. May God be glorified and His peace reign in the hearts of those who trust Him."

Fun Trip and Easter

Took a fun trip with the family and youth group. We went to the NC Aquarium - Ft. Fisher (down close to Wilmington). We also stopped by UNC-W. Justin is going to school there next year - going to swim for the school. He's like a fish. We ate at Rockola Grill in Wilmington. We had a great time.

Just signed up with Technorati (mostly because my old college roommate did - not that he's "old" - OK, a little old ). They said my ranking is 86,228 out of... a bunch other blogs I guess. I'm not sure I understand it all. My old roomie is 104,993. How about that Rick?

I put some kind of tracking stuff on my blog. Maybe that will work.

So, what's going on? It seems like everything. Getting ready for Easter and some family time next week - the kids are out of school for Spring Break. NO, we are not going to the beach!

Still getting over the 'Heels getting bounced out of the NCAA tourney - I think at least one game too early.

Cool news - our very own Barton College - located right here in Wilson, NC won the NCAA Div. 2 National Championship (Basketball). That is VERY cool. National Champs! Yes, it is Division 2, but still - National Champs! Wilson has treated them very well.

Proud to be in Wilson!

Excellence - a bad word for the chruch?

I read this post and thought it was interesting, a bit confusing - except for the three points about
what you need to have "excellence." You can read the whole article here.

The fact is, we must be honest with ourselves and come to the understanding that
no church has it all together and is doing everything perfectly. If you think
your church has it all together and does not need any more improvement to make
its ministry better and more effective, send me an e-mail about it, because I
want to come visit!
Most churches have gotten to the point where the word “excellence” is a bad word to them. Actually, the word “excellence” means the quality of being first-class. I believe that in order to do anything with excellence, you must have three things.
First, you must have a vision. How can we do something if we don’t know what we want to do? Churches that are going to be world-class must have a clear vision of where they are going and what it is going to take to get there. Members of excellent churches don’t just show up on Sunday and say, “OK, here we are, let’s have church.” They have people in places that have responsibilities and those people show up and do their job without the pastor holding their hand, because they see the vision. If you fail to plan, then you can plan to fail.
Second, excellence requires something very few people have anymore — a burden. Churches that have a burden for something succeed in that area. If your church is burdened for unsaved people, then more than likely your church will have a great outreach ministry. Few people are burdened or broken anymore.
Last, excellence requires passion. A church of excellence is made up of people who are passionate about being in the presence of the King. They love their church, their pastor, their small group, everything about their church and they want to do God’s work more often than just on Sunday mornings.
If the only time you worship God is one hour on Sunday morning, then you are not passionate about God. He is just a convenience to you, not a priority.
Your burden will determine your passion and your passion will determine your purpose. If you are truly passionate about something, then you will give it your best. Jesus gave his best and if we are passionate about him, then we should give him our best, not what’s left over.
See, it’s not such a bad word. Excellent, the way church ministry should be!

Raines anyone

Found a new TV show, Raines. It came on Thursday's at 10:00 PM, but they are already moving it to a new day - Fridays. Not sure if that is a good sign. I don't usually write about TV shows, but I'm really enjoying Raines. I think Jeff Goldblum is great. Of course he has the perfect first name, unless that is not your first name, then, maybe not so perfect.

I'm a bit out of time, meeting the youth group to go to Student Life Tour: clarity07. Can't wait, gonna be a GREAT time with them.

Been out of it for a while. For the past week I've been sick - sit in the La-Z-Boy and moan kinda sick. Of course for a guy whose wife will take care of him that doesn't have to be very sick. We like to whine and moan at the least sign of "I don't feel good." BUT, I really was sick - went to Immediate care Wednesday and was check for pneumonia and they checked my blood. At first the nurse couldn't find a vein, then when she "thought" she did... no blood. I told her I was empty. She didn't laugh. Good news - no pneumonia, but I'm still not really well. Ran a fever most of the week.

So this is a catch up and then I've got plans for some posts - a journey God is taking me through - serous stuff.

NCAA - right now my one tournament bracket that I submitted to ESPN is hitting 77.3 %. Pretty good? Well, I'm also number 667844. Try this link to see my bracket. Maybe it will work. Not sure how many people entered, but 77.3% is pretty good. So far I'm perfect in the San Antonio bracket (with Ohio State). I've, of course, got UNC to win it all. Yes, I'm a homer - but, come on - if they play to their potential... they will run away with the championship. Problem is they've not played to their potential very often.

My new journey - here is part of it (I'll try to develop it the next couple of weeks).

1. Dare2Share - check them out. We had one of their guys come speak to our Youth Pastor's network and then to our students. Great stuff. Here is the deal - are you sharing your faith... on a regular basis? Tough question, but what was the last thing Jesus asked us to do? "Go and make disciples." Well, that sounds a lot like sharing your faith and then following up on the baby Christian.

2. Discipleship - what is it? how are we doing? where are we doing it? is it Sunday School? does it even happen at church?

3. Church Growth - are we tracking who is coming? where are they? who is greeting? how do we know if we've succeeded? I've got some ideas - I'll share later

4. Personal Spiritual Growth - is this sacrificed in the name of "religion"? who is doing it? does church count? what kind of grade would God give you?

5. there is more, but that is enough for now
